If you're just doing very basic cutting and editing, try Lossless Cut. LosslessCut is great and you can use it pretty fast with just the keyboard, so it will help with your tons of files. It will be faster to cut what you need and then have it for converting, storing, etc. I'd also recommend trimming the videos before you do any editing with them.
